Summary:General Norstad makes a statement for visiting US newsmen and explains the nature of SHAPE, before saying goodbye and leaving the room. The press men try out their equipment.
Description:The purpose of SHAPE is the defence of NATO Europe - from the northern tip of Norway to the eastern border of Turkey. This purpose is drawn from the North Atlantic Treaty, from which General Norstad quotes. The Alliance has progressed and strengthened. Norstad highlights threats made in August 1961 by First Secretary Khrushchev of the Soviet Union against NATO member Greece. He then goes on to quote from the response of the Greek Prime Minster Karamanlis. Norstad concludes that greatest achievement of NATO may be the granting of "stature and dignity to all men within its boundaries". The recording crews then remove some of their equipment.
