Summary:The rebuilding of the West Berlin electric power plant (to replace the plant now in the Soviet sector of Berlin) and its importance in the city's economic and political struggle against Communist domination.
Description:West Berlin – the enclave experiences the return of electricity. Criticism of the Soviet Union from narrator for leaving residents of Berlin at the mercy of Soviet supply. Scenes of postwar destruction are used to highlight the removal of electricity generation equipment by Soviet forces, following their arrival in the city in 1945. For three years, West Berlin was dependant on the Soviets for energy provision. European Recovery Program funds are used to rebuild Power Plant West [Reuter West], with two thousand people working on the new station. The blockade of Berlin and the airlift response of the Western Allies is referenced. During the blockade of Berlin, air freight is used to keep the building on schedule. With the blockade defeated, work on the power plant is finished and power begins to be generated, bringing "light again in free Berlin."
