Summary:Field Marshal Montgomery addresses a group of journalists on NATO strategy.
Description:Field Marshal Montgomery gives his thoughts on the past, present and future of the military position of NATO. Montgomery emphasises the deterrent value of NATO forces, particularly their possession of nuclear weapons. Such weaponry is useful in the opposition of dictators and the deterrence they offer forms the basis of NATO strategy. Montgomery advocates the maintenance of deterrence and an increase in the number of states in possession of nuclear weapons. He also highlights the need for greater understanding of the global dimensions of the Cold War. Remarks are also offered on the need to avoid burdensome financial obligations to Western defence and of the necessity of diffusing political tensions between the East and West. The reel ends with Montgomery's responses to questions from the press.
