Summary:The story of how one small Turkish village profits by the acquisition of a Marshall Plan-imported tractor, and benefits from mechanical training provided for young farmers, as part of Turkey's recovery programme.
Description:The film shows the acquisition of new mechanised farming equipment (all Massey-Harris) in Turkey, funded by money from the Marshall Plan, with an emphasis on the importance of maintaining equipment. Much of the material appears in re-edited form in the film TURKISH HARVEST. The film notes that while there have been changes in Turkish farming, such as the adoption of metal ploughs, the farmer in Turkey has had to rely on horses to pull machinery. However, using Marshall Plan aid, Turkey has begun to import modern agricultural equipment, which can be purchased by farmers who have made a successful application to the Agricultural Committee. With assistance from a representative of the Committee, a group of villagers arrange the purchase of a tractor, subject to the Committee requirement that someone be capable of driving the tractor. One of the villagers, believed to be named Necdet, is identified as having truck driving experience from the Second World War. He waives the opportunity to attend a tractor maintenance training school, with another villager, believed to be named Amin, going in his stead. The training at the school, provided over a number of months, is shown. The tractor arrives in the village, and Necdet is quickly working with vastly improved efficiency. However, lacking the knowledge, he is unable to repair the tractor when it breaks down. Amin returns from school and quickly identifies the problem; the spark plugs have become too dirty. He cleans them, and instructs Necdet in how to do it himself. The villages hire a combine harvester, again helped by the Agricultural Committee. All the new equipment is credited with increasing crop yields – good news for the farmer.
