Summary: King George V visits the RAF Cadet Brigade at its training camp at Saint Leonards-on-Sea (near Hastings), 30th August 1918.
Description: The King's train pulls in to West St. Leonards' station near the camp. The King, wearing his RAF uniform, is escorted out of the station to face an honour guard formed by cadets of Number 2 Wing, which he salutes and inspects (a newsreel cameraman is moving behind them). The full brigade is drawn up on its parade field, in the Filsham valley, where the Royal Standard is unfurled. Cadets of Number 8 Wing out on the hill above the field form the shape of an RAF standard and the initials RAF. The King stands at the saluting base (note the various cameramen at work) while in the distance Number 8 Wing marches off. The remaining cadets present arms and perform a demonstration of drill. The King takes the salute before walking from his saluting base to the Royal Standard to take the Royal salute. He then drives with his party into the town, to the saluting base on the sea front in Sea Road, opposite West Marina Gardens, where the guard of honour again presents arms. The cadets march past in general salute. One of the officers leading his squadron past is Captain HRH Prince Albert, the Duke of York. The King then drives to the cheers of the crowd (the camera is in a following car) up along the sea front towards Hastings and into the back streets, where he inspects the officers' quarters and cadets' messes. Outside one of the messes a Women's Royal Air Force contingent has paraded. The King is then driven back to West St. Leonards' station, boards his train, and leaves to the cheers of the cadets.
