Title:RAF CADETS ARRIVE IN SAINT LEONARDS [Allocated Title]
Film Number:IWM 640-2
Summary: Disjointed film of new arrivals in Hastings coming to join the RAF Cadet Brigade in nearby Saint Leonards-on-Sea, 1st August 1918.
Description: The film opens with a group of young officer cadets filing into their temporary billets in the Sussex Hotel in St. Leonards-on-Sea. A large contingent of cadets has arrived at Hastings main railway station and is forming up outside the station under the supervision of RAF officers. These cadets are all transfers from other services and branches, including a cavalryman with his blanket roll and a number of naval officers who form up by themselves. They are marched off. In a back garden an RAF sergeant gives a drill demonstration with a rifle. Back at the station the groundcrew are loading surplus kitbags into a 3-ton truck. The new arrivals parade at the tented camp in the Filsham valley at Saint Leonards-on-Sea. The film then returns to the station, possibly for the next arrivals, who are drilled as they march. This contingent is taken to a building marked as the Cadet Distribution Depot. Back to the sergeant's drill demonstration, this time showing how to deliver a message to an officer with the RAF salute (this is shown in slow motion, then at normal speed). More recruits, in civilian clothes, are led through the streets of Hastings to the Distribution Depot. Back at the tented camp the cadets are starting to settle down.
