Summary: "The story of a British coalminer in time of war."
Description: The film in effect presents a relatively detailed picture of the various techniques involved in bringing coal from the seam to the public at a comparatively modern colliery, with the twin themes of the arduousness of the work and its importance to the national war effort running through the commentary. Besides the more obvious and spectacular tasks (cutting, blasting and hewing) the film shows the less dramatic work of 'fillers' loading the conveyor belt, the young man controlling the 'tubs' on the mine rails, the 'on-setter' and 'engine-man' at the cage, coal-sorting etc; there is also a sequence suggesting the uses in war of coal and its by-products. "Coal is a raw material of victory."
