Description: Opening sequence shows smelting - small quantity is tested; furnace is tapped, ingots poured and rolled. Maps are used to illustrate the distribution of Britain's ore, limestone and coal resources; the film then talks of Britain's pioneering role in steel history (Bessemer, open hearth, and electric furnace processes) and so leads into continuing metallurgical research. Special alloys (using tungsten, chrome, nickel etc - imported materials) are illustrated, as are special processes (eg control of grain direction in steel parts) to meet particular demands or stresses.
