- Description: I. 'NEWS FROM EUROPE.' Winston Spencer Churchill and his daughter Mary Churchill are driven by open tourer past cheering civilian crowds during a visit to Brussels. Close up footage shows a street sign that reads "Avenue Winston Churchill". Churchill makes an acceptance speech at Brussels University following the award of an honorary doctorate (mute). Later the Churchills watch cheering Belgian children from the balcony of Brussels Town Hall. Interior footage taken in Antwerp Town Hall shows Churchill being awarded the freedom of the city. Churchill embarks on HMS Bellona for the journey home. HMS Bellona leaves Antwerp harbour escorted by small harbour craft. Elsewhere, British Army occupation troops of the 46th (North Midlands) Division are involved in logging operations at a forest site in Southern Austria. British troops fell trees with chainsaws in an attempt to build up wood stocks before the onset of winter. logs are cut to regulation size (to fit British Army stoves and ovens) and are loaded onto the back of waiting soft-skinned vehicles. Film footage taken from the Arlberg Express (train) on its journey between Vienna and Paris shows panoramic mountain scenery. Views of Feldkirch Railway Station follows. A train destination sign mounted on a railway carriage reads "Paris-Est, Belfort-Mulhouse-Basel, Zürich-Buchs-Innsbruck-Saltzburg [sic]." Interior footage taken on the Arlberg Express shows passengers and the train cook preparing food in the galley. A sign reads "DP Children's Center UNRRA - Team 182." Displaced children under the care of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) take part in outdoor activities at a children's home near Dachau. Displaced children sing songs in a garden. Close up footage shows Dachau camp induction numbers that were branded onto the children's arms by the Nazis. Interior footage shows children enjoying a meal at the UNRRA children's centre canteen. A nurse attends to a group of very young children who sit in a play-pen. Civilians queue at the entrance of the newly reopened Hagenbeck Zoo near Hamburg. Extended footage shows the zoo's animal occupants which include horses, zebra, ostrich, bears, lions, rhino and elephants. Hagenbeck elephants "Kiri" and "Manni" are put to work helping rubble clearance. The elephants are given extra fodder at the end of their working shift.
