Description: Reel 1: Lancaster ASRIII of 210 Sqn (OZ•V) SW283 in flight with lifeboat fitted to bomb bay area. After homing in on “shadowing” aircraft which has located ditched crew the carrier aircraft prepares to drop lifeboat. This is shown in diagrammatic form. Sighting, marking and dropping runs carried out. Automatic deployment of rocket assisted buoyant retrieval lines (170yds) to either side of lifeboat enables ditched crew to eventually reach the lifeboat. Actual footage of drop shown. Ditched crew board lifeboat – “shadowing” aircraft departs area leaving carrier aircraft to assume shadowing role. Watertight compartments containing survival equipment described. Immediate action instructions provided for crew to start engine etc.
Reel 2: Following the ditched crew as they remove the parachute slings, deployment apparatus and prepare the lifeboat (pulling drogue anchor and rocket propelled retrieval lines in, checking for leaks, releasing compass etc.) deploying keel, rudder. Dispose of the dinghies, by sinking, once serviceability of lifeboat is ascertained. Preparing lifeboat engine for starting.
Reel 3: Erecting mast and unfurling main sail and foresail. With sails set the boat is put on required course. Starting engine.
Reel 4: Checking signalling lamp, breaking out sleeping suits, wireless set and kite aerial, checking emergency rations, etc. Raising the dodger (spray sheet/hood) to reduce effect of spray on occupants.
