Summary: Life for British troops in the trenches on the Western Front and munition production in Britain, 1915-1916.
Description: Troops at the Front receive letters from home (acted). The Guards Division in very muddy conditions in the Loos sector, including the 'Southerland Avenue' position. A full caption of Prime Minister Asquith's speech at the Guildhall detailing the British position on the war. Examples of the developing war industry: soldiers and civilians drilling in Hyde Park, and fully kitted-out soldiers about to embark. "Our cause is just, our arm is strong, our will inflexible and with a united Empire we shall win !" The formation of the Ministry of Munitions on 25th May 1915, showing women munition workers "for men must fight and women must work". Metalworking furnaces, "the workshops of Hades", and heavy gun manufacture. On the Western Front General Sir Douglas Haig replaces Field Marshal Sir John French (described incorrectly as a general). French talks with General Gouraud and General Weygand. Haig is shown with Marshals Joffre and Foch at Haig's château. The episode ends with a table of the amount of war matériel sent overseas in the first twelve months of the war, emphasised by HMS King Edward VII firing a broadside.
