- Film Number: AMY 382
- Other titles:
- Summary: Technical instructional film detailing the assembly process for the Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar petrol-fuelled air-cooled 14-cylinder two-row radial aeroplane engine.
- Description: Reel one: Assembly of components. - Throughout all operations of assembling CLEANLINESS is essential. All working parts to be oiled. Assembling cylinders. - All valves are numbered to correspond with the number of cylinders. Fit circlip to valve stems. Assembling valve rockers. Assembling tappets in guides. - Note lubricating grooves in roller pins and tappets. Fitting pressure filter in front cover. - Note that valve and seating are making good joint. Assembling oil pump - Fitting oil pressure relief valve. Adjust release valve to maximum pressure. This can be re-adjusted after engine has run. Soft jaws to vice or soft clamps must be used. Note that shims are replaced in correct position. Note shellac joint. Bend up tab washers. Assembling timing planets in bracket. Assembling magneto and tachometer drive. Assembling connecting rods in master ring. Note that auxiliary rods are fitted to Master Ring, holes to be on the trailing side. Reel two: Part Two – All components having been assembled engine is now ready for erection. Fit tappet assemblies, noting positioning numbers. Shellac all joints. Precaution: Turn holding bolts of 6R, 3F and 6F, 3R 180 degrees when tappet guides are in position. Bolts should not be finally tightened up until tappets have been set square. See that the tappets are free in their guides. Method of fitting a new cylinder and adjustment of adaptor sleeves. The gap between the ends of cylinder rocking band must be 1/2” as shown by gauge. Note that cylinder is not now in correct position. Adjust by turning adaptor sleeve to a different positioning hole and replace set screw. When cylinder is in correct position the exhaust and inlet ports are at right angles to axis of crankshaft facing rear. Reverse crankcase so that connecting rod assemblies may be placed in position. Connecting rod assemblies. Place No.1 master ring assembly in crankcase with master rod in No.1 cylinder bore and large lugs leading. Place No.2 master ring in crankcase with master rod in No.1R cylinder bore and large lugs leading. Connecting rod assemblies are placed as far away from centre as possible to prevent bearings being damaged when lowering crankshaft. Crankshaft. N.B. - A method of securing rollers while lowering crankshaft into position. When rollers have entered housing, remove clip before crankshaft is finally lowered. Bolt up connecting rod assemblies and fix split pins. N.B.- All bolts are numbered with corresponding numbers on lugs of master ring. Fit rear wall of crankcase. Faces to be free from burrs and abrasions. A shellac joint is made and roller race housing should be tallowed. Note positioning dowel. Use distance pieces to secure fan casing until rear cover is fitted. Fit Y pipes, but do not tighten gland nut right up. Note that gland packing is not disarranged or ragged. Engine is then turned over and bolted on stand. Note that No.1F cylinder orifice is pointing vertically upwards. Raise crankshaft slightly to enable halves of keeper plate to be engaged. This having been done lower crankshaft. (Note that keeper plate is right side up). Fitting Cam Ring. The cam ring turns at one-sixth engine speed. Having 3 inlet and 3 exhaust cams the valve operation is increased to half engine speed. Precaution : Before fitting cam ring pull all tappets out to full extent. Fit retaining screws in keeper plate. Position the holes with small lever. Fit screws and split pins. Fit driving sleeve key. Fit timing gear driving wheel and bracket carrying planet wheels together, but do not mesh pinions.
