- Film Number: ADM 1614

- Summary: Royal Navy and foreign salvage vessels begin to clear blockships from the Suez Canal at Port Said. British troops and English, French and Italian nationals are evacuated.
- Description: A coach pulls up before a party of British military police, and women and children de-bus. Paperwork is checked as the evacuees mill about. An MP - cast in an unusually benevolent rôle - carries a small child and holds the hand of another as he escorts their mother onto a waiting Royal Engineers Transportation Z-craft Z.3. A second lighter, Z.1 is also present. More evacuees go aboard Z.3, which then makes off. A French cargo ship Alberte Le Borgne passes left to right - HMS Forth is moored in the background. MSs from a craft in the harbour as it passes some of the salvage vessels near the outer basin - HMS Kingarth lies next to the 80-ton floating crane No 827 which lies on its beam ends in the shallow water. Further in, the RFAs Sea Salvor and Salveda lie alongside - to starboard and port respectively - of the wrecked suction dredger Paul Solente. The French LCT 525 lies near wreck No 17, the tug Hercule - the Suez Canal Company offices are visible in the background. LS pan around the inner harbour, dotted with ships. Passing shot from a smallcraft to the German salvage craft Ausdauer and Energie in position around the wreck of the hopper Triton - alongside the heavy lift vessels are the tugs Wotan and Hermes. The cameracraft speeds past the French tug Pachyderme (A.718). Cut to LS off the port bow of two liners moored in the outer harbour - a tug is just withdrawing after assisting the new arrival New Australia to a berth alongside the troopship Asturias - the camera pans right over the assembled shipping to the shore, where a French LST, a survey vessel and the oiler Lac Tonlé-Sap (A.631) are alongside. LS of the two liners again. Sequence shot on a LCA taking officers and civilians out to the Asturias - the craft runs alongside and they go up the accommodation ladder. HA from onboard the Asturias to a Z-craft alongside with troops - the men come onboard heavily laden with kit. A LCA runs alongside the Z-craft and a stretcher case is carried across the lighter and, not without some difficulty, up the ship's accommodation ladder. The wounded man is accompanied by a doctor and nurse. Cut back to sequence showing civilian evacuees boarding a Z-craft. A MP helps an elderly and obviously infirm Italian woman totter onto Z.7. A young boy holds a small suitcase painted with his name, C. SAPIANO. More evacuees come onboard - the liners can be seen lying in the background. A stretcher is carried past - the casualty's civilian hat has been placed over his face in the manner which traditionally denotes a corpse. A Franciscan friar bids farewell to some of his female flock - one of them especially pretty and dressed in the height of fashion. Cut back to the salvage operation. Three salvage craft, all with lifting horns, attempt to raise a wreck - the camera is on a fourth such vessel. A section of the wreckage emerges from the water. MS to the bridge of the cameraship and pan along the deck to show the lifting wires running up to the horns. The cameraship runs across the bows of Ausdauer and Energie, while a shot from the shore shows the ships stern-on. Between the German vessels are visible the funnels of the hopper Triton. LS to LC.10 and LC.11 near the wreck of the hopper Neptune, the cameracraft passing on to the wreck of the bucket dredger Peluse and the canal salvage vessel Pollux. LS to HMS Forth and the New Australia still at their moorings - the Asturias has sailed. Sequence showing the Ausdauer and Energie beginning the removal of the wrecked Triton - the tug Hermes takes up position ahead of the lifting vessels, and the tug Careful astern of them, as the four ships begin to thread a course between the shore and the wreck of the Paul Solente.
