Film Number:ADM 4758
Other titles:POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - SUEZ [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Commander Husband explains the work of TG 65.2 to a press conference and exhibits some of the items recovered from the canal. Aerial views of salvage craft and minehunters in the canal and the fortifications along its banks.
Description: Rear-Admiral Carroll, USN, CTF 65, addresses a press conference on HMS Abdiel (?) in Port Said. Recovered items are laid out for inspection, including land mines, grenades and mortar bombs. A map of the canal has been set up to aid the briefing. Commander Husband addresses the press. CUs of the tail assemblies of a 500-pound aerial bomb and a mortar bomb recovered by British divers. The three British minehunters are alongside Abdiel - all have their main radar scanning. MS of 40mm Bofors on the awning-covered focsle of HMS Wilton. Commander Husband continues his talk to the press, holding up a plot of contacts made between KM 96.6 and KM 98.4. Cut to an aerial sequence shot from a US CH-53 - in the canal is the US heavy lift craft USS Crandall and two crane barges near a wreck (bucket dredge No 23 ?) - the helicopter hovers to provide good views for the cameraman - the scene is overlooked by the Anzac war memorial. Aerial views of deserted Egyptian trenches along the canal bank, the memorial, and a scuttled ship lying on an even keel in shallow water - possibly the African Gelb. The environs of the canal are littered with the debris of war, including a wrecked SAM, still on its transporter - the sands are marked by tracks and craters. HMS Wilton executes a turn in the canal - again the helicopter circles to oblige the cameraman. Cut to view from quayside as the FCDT's launch Nada comes alongside. HA from Abdiel to the bridge tops of Bossington and Maxton alongside, both painted with the Union Jack - pan right to show Wilton joining the trot.
