Description: I. Target practice on a merchant ship. Two men throw a smoke float over the stern as a target for 4-inch gun mounted on the quarter deck. An officer observes the fall of shot, which is quite good. CU of trainer looking through the sighting telescope - he has wadding in his ears as a protection against the noise.
II. River Class frigate carries out a practice shoot. Man fires Oerlikon. HA onto the forward 4-inch gun as crew open ready use shell locker, load and fire - the men are stripped to the waist but wearing anti-flash. A rocket is fired to provide a flare marker for AA practice. Boat drill - crewmen assemble in life-jackets. HA onto forward 4-inch gun as the frigate buries her head in a choppy sea. MSs aft down port and starboard sides to after Oerlikons - frigate's stump mainmast comes into frame at end of sequence. CU looking over the V-sight of the bearing indicator on ship's compass.
III. Onboard merchant ship. LS of companion vessels in convoy. HA from bridge to foremast and raised focsle deck with pedestal 20mm emplacements - there is a deck cargo of densely packed crates. LA.CU of funnel top - dense black smoke swirls away aft. Ship's officer and a lascar rig a rope ladder over the guard rail. Film reverts to episode I: crew arm smoke float and drop it overboard as it begins to function - ship's officer takes binoculars to observe the fall of shot - shell is rammed home, followed by charge - gun fires three times at receding float.
