Summary: After an exchange of civilities, the Allied forces quit Port Said on 'E' Day, Saturday, 22 December, 1956. Once at sea, the Allied flagships exchange a final salute before parting.
Description: CU of a smiling sailor from SS Phoenicia. MS off starboard beam of the survey ship HMS Dalrymple, and pan right to merchantman and a large troopship - the cameraship is moored almost directly astern of the liner. MS pan head to foot and LS of the De Lesseps statue - during the night a party had scaled the statue, and secured to its right hand poles carrying a large White Ensign and a French Tricolour - in the background are an LST and five LCTs, including Counterguard and Parapet. Telephoto of the flags fluttering bravely in the morning sunshine. Onboard HMS Tyne on the day of the Allied withdrawal there is a small ceremony to mark Anglo-French cordiality. General Beaufré comes aboard and inspects Royal Marine guard of honour. He chats with the other commanders, Vice-Admiral Durnford-Slater, Lieutenant-General Stockwell, and Air Marshal Barnett. They are joined by Durnford-Slater's deputy (?), Rear-Admiral Lancelot. Stockwell and Beaufré shake hands before the French commander returns to his flagship. At sea after the withdrawal, and LS aft down Tyne's starboard side to RM guard drawn up on the quarterdeck. The French flagship Georges Leygues closes to steam past on the starboard side - the French have manned ship and fire a salute as they come alongside. Tyne returns the courtesy. After the exchange of salutes, the Georges Leygues draws ahead.
