Summary: Gurkhas participate in a river patrol on the island of Nunukan in Borneo. They also train in embarkation and deplaning and deployment with RN Whirlwind helicopters.
Description:LS of a motor patrol boat lying just offshore with an assault craft alongside. HA as an assault craft comes alongside the cameraboat - presumably to pick up the cameraman as the next shots are studies of the men in the assault craft - a RM officer, Gurkha riflemen and a RN midshipman at the helm. A monkey swims across the river, and climbs into the trees. The cameracraft passes an anchored patrol boat, possibly an HQ vessel as it carries prominent radio masts. LS to the jungle shoreline - the Indonesians have opened fire on the cameracraft but it falls short and the only indication of the emergency is the jerkiness of the film as the craft picks up speed, and a barely visible patch of smoke rising above the treeline. LSs of the minesweeper HMS Penston steaming of the coast of Nunukan, and an anchored Malaysian gun boat, one of the Vosper-built Sri Kedah Class. Cut to a general view of Gurkhas gathered on a grass field around one of the Whirlwind HAS.7s of 846 Squadron - they are being instructed on the danger points. LS beneath the tail boom of Whirlwind 'V' as a squad of three Gurkhas runs to board the aircraft, then disembarks and deploys, the men throwing themselves prone on the ground near the aircraft. The Whirlwind pilot gives the thumbs-up for the next squad to embark. Another three men practice boarding and deplaning - one is rather slow on leaving the helicopter and there is some delay before the squad leader can signal the all clear to the pilot. Whirlwind 'Z' approaches the field, to be directed down by a marshaller. Three other Whirlwinds are on the field. LA of helicopter 'V' hovering over a football pitch - a pack is thrown out, a rope is let down, and the squad ropes down to the ground. Local children look on. A Gurkha is instructed by a marine in the art of marshalling a helicopter in - Whirlwind 'V' obeys his instructions.
