Other titles:POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: On her way to join the Far East Fleet, HMS Centaur is diverted to join other rescue vessels attending the burnt-out hulk of the Greek cruise liner Lakonia near Madeira.
Description: Various shots of Centaur's bow wave and wake as she steams at full speed to the aid of the Lakonia. The carrier's air strength includes Sea Vixens, Fairey Gannets and Whirlwind helicopters. Cut to views of the fire-ravaged hull of the Lakonia from one of Centaur's boats circling the liner. Aerial views of Centaur, Lakonia, and some of the other vessels in the vicinity, including a salvage tug, probably Dutch. LA sequence shot from ship's boat as it crosses from port to starboard close under the Lakonia's bows to give a good view of the bridge. After taking further shots of the liner, Centaur's boat is recovered by the carrier. Further aerials of the liner include some particularly effective shots, taken during a break in the cloud cover. There is no film of any obvious rescue work, all passengers having been evacuated before the carrier's arrival.
