- Title: INTERVIEWS WITH FLIGHT CREW AND MARINES ON HMS CARDIFF [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 6391
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE GULF, 1990-1991 [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: A series of interviews that illustrate rather nicely the differences between marines and sailors.
- Description: Unsteady pan about the hangar interior - the doors are open and the Lynx has been lashed down halfway out of the hangar. LA from flightdeck as a man is winched up to a second Lynx hovering overhead. Once the man is safely onboard, the aircraft makes off. Cut to group shot of flight crew assembled on the flightdeck (815 Squadron). Each man introduces himself by name and rating, and then gives a brief description of his duties. There is a certain amount of friendly group rivalry in these accounts. Having worked his way round the group the interviewer then asks Mark Davis, M2 of the flight, whether the situation in the Gulf makes his job more difficult: the answer is the heat, which makes 14 hours per day work shifts "not very comfortable". The interviewer then asks for messages for home, which are duly given: Steve Hayes (R1 and SE1) makes mention of his absent beard, an oblique reference to anti-gas precautions. Cut to a second take, the flight reassembled with some additional members, most notably Lieutenant Guy Head, the Flight Pilot, and Lieutenant Phil Needham, the Flight Commander. The routine is much as before. Cut to Cardiff's marines, men from 42 Commando. All look appropriately physical - in strong contrast to the sailors - and they are introduced by their Sergeant, Bob Morrison. During the ensuing interviews there is repeated - and presumably satiric - reference to their hectic schedule, sun and sand, and shopping in Dubai. Unlike the flight crew, the marines seem intent on giving the impression that they are doing very little. Various dissolute episodes are hinted at, but pre-eminence goes to Marine McKay who managed to get arrested in Gibraltar.
