- Summary:
- Description: I. Reel One. Sequence showing a convoy of small freighters at sea. The cameraship enters Dieppe, passing below Notre Dame de Bon Secours, and enters Avant Port where the hospital ship Naushon is alongside. The cameraship steams on past damaged quays to Pont Colbert and its demolished swing bridge. LCT 675 and 7075 lie in the Arriere Port. Cameraship passes through the Bassin du Canada, where Empire Scout and The Earl are alongside, and into the Bassin de Paris - the freighter Sodality is visible in the background, behind a damaged abutment. In the Bassin de Paris the tug Abeille 20 passes by the merchantman William Homan - camera pans to show four other vessels alongside. II. Sequence showing soldiers in the hold of a freighter alongside, loading boxes of .303 ammunition into cargo nets. The boxes are swung up onto the quayside, then pushed along a roller-conveyor for stacking and loading onto motor transport - in the background is a warehouse of 'Robbe Freres' and a blockhouse marked with Red Cross symbols - an Austin K5 3-tonner is parked nearby - the quayside dump also contains 9mm Auto, 3.7-inch AA and 25-pounder ammunition. III. Army men attempt, with some help from locals, to repair rail lines on the Quai des Indes - clearing debris, welding, cutting sleepers, grading track, laying sleepers and rails, fixing fish plates - SS Thornaby appears in the background. MS over footbridge and lock gates at Pont Amiral Rolland to the cabin of the 'Officier de port', guarded by a British sentry. Pan over a group of Pioneers taking tea - RB-19 crane in the background. IV. Sequence showing men engaged in repairing the demolished southern side of the Pont Lavoinne - LCT 354 is visible in the Arriere Port beyond. LS views from the Bassin Duquesne show the Pollet Church in the background. V. MLS and MS of cratered Quai Henry IV, and study of capsized vessels in the Avant Port. MS pan over basin showing the quayside demolitions. VI. MS from embarkation hard on the eastern side of the Arriere Port as LCT 455 and 7049 disembark REME and survey (?) vehicles - M9A1 halftrack, 38-ton M6 tractor and jeeps. Reel Two. Continuation of Reel One, with LCTs unloading jeeps, 3-ton GS trucks and a Scammell Pioneer. VII. Sequence on quayside showing locals shifting boxes of 25-pounder ammunition. VIII. Sequence onboard LCT 354, where Soviet Asiatics, captured in German service, have been confined on the vehicle deck. They are guarded by a soldier of 15th (Scottish) Division. The POWs play cards, smoke, and wash clothing. A hand-out of cigarettes by British soldiers on the upper deck results in a mêlée. IX. Locals carry flour sacks and ration boxes along the quayside to waiting trucks. X. LS-MS across the Bassin de Paris to the Quai de Maroc, showing two wrecked gantry transporters and scuttled dredger and flak ship at the southern end. The freighter Varegg is alongside.
