Chief Petty Officer Eric Mills wins the gold medal at the annual Catering Services competition held in Bournemouth. 3 March. Churchill Class nuclear fleet submarine «HMS Churchill» (S.46) visits Kiel, Germany on a five day goodwill trip. Lieutenants Mitchell and Ann Willard from shore establishment «HMS Collingwood», Portsmouth, visit Penhale junior school in Portsmouth, with their voice signature machine designed to help deaf children form words. 16 March. Princess Anne visits shore establishment «HMS Vernon» to name a new sea racing yacht «Sea Wraith III». 14 April. Princess Anne visits Vospers dockyard in Southampton to launch the first type 21 frigate «HMS Amazon» (F.169), fitted entirely with gas turbines. 10 June. HRH The Queen visits the Vickers dockyard, Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, to launch the first type 42 destroyer «HMS Sheffield» (D.80). Audacious Class aircraft carrier «HMS Ark Royal» (R.09) at the Moray Firth, Scotland, to trial the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities of Hawker Siddeley Harriers from No.1 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF). September. The Royal Navy's seventh nuclear powered submarine «HMS Swiftsure» (S.126) is launched. May. Boxer Henry Cooper OBE collects a £100 cheque on behalf of Cancer Research from the crew of Audacious Class aircraft carrier «HMS Eagle» (R.05), who took part in a 29 mile road race to raise the money. First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Michael Pollock inspects the United States Navy tank landing ship «USS Wood County» (LST-1178) and the hydrofoil based fast patrol boat «USS Tucumcari» (PGH-2). The annual 'Miss Meet the Marines' beauty pageant, hosted by entertainer Jimmy Saville, is won by Wendy Carter of Exmouth. July. Type 16 anti submarine fast frigate «HMS Rapid» (F.138) and C Class destroyer «HMS Cavalier» (R.73) meet for a race in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, with the older destroyer winning by half a length. Ice patrol vessel «HMS Endurance» (A.171) inadvertently came across round the world yachtsman Chay Bligh as he languished in the doldrums 80 miles off of Cape Horn, Chile, South America. Having given him some luxuries to help with his voyage, «HMS Endurance» continued on her mission. Chay Bligh continued and was met by Audacious Class aircraft carrier «HMS Ark Royal» (R.09) during the final leg of his voyage. September. Prince Charles arrives at «HMS Dartmouth», the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in Dartmouth, Devon, for his initial officer training. Tiger Class guided missile cruiser «HMS Blake» (C.99) visits Acapulco, Mexico and San Francisco, America, for British Week. 15 October. After an illustrious career, Town Class cruiser «HMS Belfast» (C.35) leaves Portsmouth on her final voyage, on the way to the Pool of London, where she will be preserved by the HMS Belfast Trust rather than being broken up. September. 17 ships of the Far East Fleet bid farewell to Changi, Singapore, as it is handed over to Singapore. The fleet is led by the flagship County Class destroyer «HMS Glamorgan» (D.19). October. Prince Charles' passing out parade in Portsmouth takes place at the end of October, followed by his first posting a week later, onto County Class destroyer «HMS Norfolk» (D.21). 20 December. Prime Minister Ted Heath meets and dines with United States President Richard Nixon, on board County Class destroyer «HMS Glamorgan» (D.19).
