- Title: SLOW CONVOY C LEAVES SOUSSE TO JOIN IN THE ATTACK ON PANTELLERIA [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 560
- Other titles: MEDITERRANEAN OPERATIONS OF THE ROYAL NAVY [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Convoy C, consisting mainly of a force of 19 LCTs, leaves Sousse and sails for Pantelleria to land troops after a major naval and air bombardment of the island. Cameraman embarked on LCT(3) 391.
- Description: Troops embark on LCTs at Sousse. The convoy leaves the harbour in the evening and the cameraman is able to catch some spectacular sunset cloud effects. Various shots of LCTs of Convoy C underway. Allied bomber forces pass over the convoy. Ship's officers semaphore and take bearings while tank crews check their equipment - one man decorates the turret of his vehicle with a Scottish lion. Gun crew of 2-pounder AA look alert. LSs to the island wreathed in smokescreens - the high ground rising above the smoke is itself crowned with explosions. Three crewmen wearing lifejackets watch the show. A Lieutenant waits for a radio message. MS as HMS Tartar (G.43) passes at speed. LCTs assemble and head in towards the port - just inland a fire sends up a thick plume of oily smoke. LSs from offshore to the port and the hills beyond - the slopes are being bombed and spectacular explosions arise - the attacking aircraft manoeuvre in a manner faintly reminiscent of the 'cadena'. Now safely onshore the soldiers carry ammunition crates along the quayside - LCT(3) 395 is alongside in the background and a bulldozer has been landed. A large group of Italian POWs have been rounded up and placed under a casual guard. CU of a group of Italian Naval POWs. A 7.62mm AA gun in an emplacement - blast has twisted the gun round on its pedestal mount to point at the ruined buildings in the background. MS of a group off British soldiers, one of whom has already acquired a guitar - they wave to the camera. A Royal Italian Air Force medical officer helps an old, and now presumably homeless, old woman across the rubble. CU of the medical officer, now surrounded by smiling British soldiers one of whom has his arm around the man's shoulders - the Italian manages a nervous grin. Locals pass by with luggage, children, bits of furniture. LS over the port. The British break out a Union Jack. Soldiers file past a small block of flats pock-marked by shrapnel. As the British pick their way over the rubble they pass the defeated Italians, a dishevelled crowd carrying suitcases and bundles - two of the British carry rolled-up stretchers.
