Title:TEST OF FIRESTREAK AIR-TO-AIR MISSILE [Allocated Title]
Film Number:ADM 1871
Other titles:POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Aerial film recording a test shot of a Firestreak air-to-air missile and the destruction of the Gloster Meteor target aircraft.
Description: The same test filmed from two different camera aircraft. A Supermarine Attacker fires a stern shot, the Firestreak being released from an underwing pylon. The missile climbs away towards the target closing on the starboard quarter. At the last moment the Firestreak veers to impact on the Meteor's port engine, presumably the hotter of the two jets. There is a spectacular fireball and an expanding cloud of debris. After the explosion, the drone reappears, falling out of the smoke cloud with its whole wing ablaze.
