Summary: HMS Cavendish pays a 4-day courtesy visit to the Ethiopian port of Massawa. Emperor Haile Selassie visits the ship.
Description: HMS Cavendish fires a salute as she enters Massawa. The destroyer is visited by an Ethiopian naval officer - possibly Commander HIH Prince Alexander Desta, the Deputy Commander of the Imperial Ethiopian Navy. The Emperor's grandchildren are shown round the ship. Haile Selassie pays a visit. As the Imperial limousine draws up the saluting gun on Cavendish fires a 21-gun salute. The Emperor is greeted on the quayside by British military attachés (?) and introduced to Captain Evans. RN guard of honour presents arms, and the Emperor, standing on a small dais, returns the salute. HIH inspects quayside guard and divisions onboard ship. The Emperor departs.
