Title:BRITISH PARAMOUNT NEWS (6 AUGUST 1945) [Main Title]
Film Number:ADM 478
Other titles:
Summary: "Welcome to my Country". Newsreel coverage of the meeting between King George VI and President Truman, held in August 1945 on board HMS Renown
Description: The King boards Renown and greets the ship's officers. The President comes aboard and inspects the Marine guard of honour. The two are posed together on deck. This was the first visit to Britain by an American President since Woodrow Wilson; earlier in the day Truman had visited a blitzed area of Plymouth - but this was kept secret from newsmen, "hence there is no film record of a most interesting part of this historic visit". After lunch, President and King say goodbye. Long shot of USS Augusta. Medium close-up of King George looking out towards the departing vessel. King posed with Union Jack fluttering in the background. "May the time soon come when, on a longer visit, Britain's affectionate regard for the President of the United States will find full expression from people, government and King."
