- Title: THE ROYAL NAVY PROVIDES RELIEF SUPPLIES FOR GREEK ISLANDERS AFTER THE 1953 EARTHQUAKE [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 1434
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Sailors of the Mediterranean Fleet help with food supplies and relief work in the Ionian Islands. A helicopter operating from HMS Bermuda crashes during a reconnaissance flight and the wreck is recovered.
- Description: I. Argostoli, Cephalonia. A bearded local talks before the camera, perhaps describing the earthquake. A RN Dragonfly helicopter touches down raising a huge cloud of dust. MS to a LST beached with bow doors open - in the foreground is a parked US 6x6 truck and crates of supplies. MS of a wrecked and burning house in Argostoli - the rising smoke casts shadows on the road in the bright sunlight. LS along a road in the town - the buildings on both sides have been demolished. II. LS from offshore to Zakinthos, capital of Zante, with the mountains rising up beyond the town - a helicopter passes left to right in the distance. MS from the quarterdeck of HMS Bermuda to Dragonfly 902 of HMS Falcon lifting off from top of Y turret. III. Argostoli again. LS to crowds queuing for relief supplies - a priest ambles across the foreground carrying an umbrella. A encampment of tents has been set up. Local women sit in the shade with bundles of salvaged possessions - some children make mock of the cameraman, amusing one of the younger women. CU of a demolished building. A long section of film is then rendered useless by accidental masking. A party of US personnel in a Greek army jeep talk with some of the nurses working in the relief camp - in one of the shots the depot ship HMS Forth is visible in the distance. More masked sequences. IV. Dragonfly 901 from HMS Falcon crashed at Fiskardho in Cephalonia. MS of the helicopter with smashed tail boom and bent rotors. Men clear a path and a US 6x4 lorry is used to drag the partially stripped wreck a short distance to the shore where it is embarked, along with the buckled rotors, upon LCT L.263. The cameraman is onboard the LCT as it debeaches and heads for HMS Forth.
