- Summary:
- Description: I. Fitness party on HMS London. Led by a Sub-Lieutenant, the party forms up on the forecastle just below the bridge and goes through a routine of ankle and hip exercises and knee bends. The tone is jocular. However the occasion is shortly interrupted by a voice from above informing the Sub that a senior Lieutenant is not happy and that fitness training is consequently cancelled. The unhappy Sub dismisses his men, who respond with derisory applause, then turns to the camera and tells it - with appropriate gestures - that the Lieutenant in question is an arsehole. II. Cameraship HMS Cardiff heads out of Jebel Ali, passing the Danish frigate Olfert Fischer (F.355). LA to two crewmen manning the side - they block their ears as Cardiff sounds a prolonged blast on her siren. CPO orders pipe the still, and ship's company salute. MS of HMS Brazen (F.91) secured alongside - she flashes a signal to the departing Cardiff. MSs of other ships - the forward repair ship Diligence lying outboard of an Appleleaf Class tanker, the landing ship Sir Percivale (L.3036). Cut to bridge interior and CU of helmsman. Navigating Officer takes a bearing. Officer of the Watch wearing a headset co-ordinates onboard activities. PWO addresses the crew over the tannoy - to bring the ship to a sufficient state of readiness for the forthcoming patrol a 'Hands to Action Stations' must be issued before reducing to defence watches. The necessary order is given, though without drama. On deck, crew don anti-flash. Break. Men unpack and break open rolls of belted 20mm HE ammunition. CUs as men fuse 3-inch Mk 4 rockets and load them into Corvus launcher. Armourer uses a belt stripper to remove 20mm rounds, link the belt sections together and replace the rounds - he is somewhat harassed by the cameraman, who wants him to hold his head up, provoking the comment that "It's impossible isn't it" - ie to do the work and look as the cameraman requires. The linked belt is loaded back into a box magazine. The belt is fed through the belt guide on the BMARC 20mm gun to the breech - this is not achieved without some difficulty - CUs of bead sight and muzzle break during this sequence. CU of a notice on the siderail - DANGER. GUN MAY FIRE WITHOUT WARNING - presumably this refers to the automatic Phalanx system. LA past belt guide on Phalanx to main Type 1022 radar as it scans - on the upper deck a Sub-Lieutenant urges the men to turn up the volume of their music - it is Land of Hope and Glory - which he conducts for a moment for the cameraman's benefit. LA forward to portside Phalanx as it trains to face the camera, and zoom to muzzle of gun. The ship's Lynx flies past, momentarily attracting the cameraman's attention. LA.CU to Phalanx as drive is turned on to test the cycling of the gun - barrels rotate slowly. The mounting trains back outboard and the gun cycles again, is then depressed and then pointed to maximum elevation. CUs of AP ammunition feeding through the belt guides beneath the Phalanx mounting, and the muzzles of the rotating gun - each barrel is filled with a protective wax stopper. III. Lynx lands on. LS from flightdeck as Lynx closes from the port quarter to land on - this aircraft carries the roof-mounted lanterns which are 'Hot Brick' infrared jammers. Cut to aircraft lashed down, the crew departing. MS to pilot and observer in the aircraft as the engine runs down. IV. Operations Room. CU of radar operator - he reports that he is still tracking an aircraft at 19 miles range. CUs of the display with tracks and operator's control panel. View through port and starboard LAS monitors (?) - a barge carrying oil drilling equipment is onscreen. View through a monitor covering the flightdeck, showing the Lynx lashed down - this is actually a prolonged freeze frame.
