- Title: DEVELOPMENT TRIALS OF THE RN LYNX HELICOPTER [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 2177
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Two development aircraft are tested on a simulator and at sea for landing and take-off characteristics. The semi-rigid rotor and the harpoon grid landing system are demonstrated. Possible weapon fits - a Mk 44 lightweight torpedo and mock-up Sea Skua missiles - are tried out.
- Description: Reel One. Aerial shot of Lynx prototype XX 469 in flight over the Thames at Greenwich. CUs as the helicopter makes a series of landings on a simulated flight deck. The platform is set to imitate the motion of a ship's deck in very rough weather - the Lynx lands on, then rotates on its own axis around the harpoon lock before taking off again. Views from the cockpit and the ground as the Lynx executes a barrel roll. Cut to cameraship HMS Sheffield at sea as Lynx XX 510 lands on and takes off again. CU as harpoon is extended beneath the helicopter to engage the steel grid set in the flightdeck. As the Lynx once more demonstrates its ability to rotate about the harpoon lock it can be seen that the aircraft is wearing Royal Navy markings on one side and French Naval colours on the other. The harpoon is retracted and the Lynx lifts off - in the background can be seen one of the cameras set up on the edge of the flightdeck, and a distant Gazelle helicopter, probably the camera-aircraft for the aerial sequences. Aerial view of HMS Sheffield (D.80). CU of the area of steel mesh set in the flightdeck. Lynx again approaches from astern to land on - the aircraft is tethered to hard points on the deck. CU of the tail rotor. A hitch is put on the nosewheel, and winch wires secured to tow the aircraft into the hangar. MS of two mock-up Sea Skua missiles mounted on rails on helicopter's port side. HA from the rear of the hangar as the Lynx is winched in, main blades and tail folded. Lynx is brought out again. CUs of the very flat, monobloc main rotor hub and the tail rotor as the aircraft runs up to take off. FDO directs down a Wasp HAS.1 from the frigate HMS Mohawk. Reel Two. Aerial shots of Lynx landing on and taking off of Sheffield. XX 510 is tethered and a US Mk 44 lightweight torpedo secured to the aircraft. Another view of the Sea Skua mounting. Further detailed shots of the Lynx's removal to and accommodation in the ship's hangar. After a few establishing shots on Sheffield - name plate, Union Flag on jackstaff, view along focsle - the rest of the reel consists mainly of yet more take-offs and landings by the Lynx.
