Summary: Several rolls on a single reel showing aspects of the raising of the submarine HMS Sidon in Portland Harbour (each roll has a separate leader).
Description: Tugs and a salvage vessel (Swin) approach HMS Sidon. The submarine is on the surface and is seen sandwiched between four barrel-like metal cylinders, known as "camels". The previous night, these had been sunk, attached to the side of Sidon and then re-filled with air, which caused the camels (and the submarine between them) to rise. Close view shows her listing slightly on the surface, but otherwise fully supported by the four camels. Men stand on her deck as another boat with further personnel comes alongside. Cables are lashed on to Sidon from two salvage vessels, Swin and Kinbrace, which are accompanying the submarine. A third, smaller salvage vessel, Barfoss, is also in attendance. Cables are prepared on Sidon's deck ready for her to be towed to nearby Chesil Beach. Views from another vessel (possibly the depot ship HMS Maidstone, which also assisted in the salvage) show Sidon, the three salvage vessels and various small craft. Tugs are used to tow Sidon through the water. Extended views from various angles show the ships in procession as they move away from the sinking site. Further close-ups of the Sidon as the camels are adjusted and more cables are attached; camera position for many of these shots is on the deck of Sidon herself. Small vessels accompany the procession. At the end is a brief, claustrophobic shot of welding taking place on the interior of the submarine.
