- Title: FRENCH NAVAL AIRCRAFT IN CROSS-DECK OPERATIONS ON HMS EAGLE [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 1652
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Prototype French Naval aircraft - the Fouga CM 175 Zéphyr and the Breguet Br 1050 Alizé - go through trials on HMS Eagle.
- Description: Reel One. French Fouga Zéphyr overflies Eagle, then lands on. The aircraft does a series of rollers watched by spectators crowding the island. The Zéphyr does some more landings. The pilot and Commander (Air) discuss the operation while the French batsman receive instructions from the DLCO and Captain of the Flightdeck. Alizé performs a series of rollers and landings. Launchings of the Zéphyr from the starboard catapult - on one occasion it has to be manhandled into the correct alignment - more rollers and landings. Reel Two. CU of French Naval Air badge on fuselage of the Alizé. A series of launchings and landings - the French team check hook and flaps on the aircraft, serial 04. Zéphyr is launched from port catapult - a second aircraft on the starboard cat is experiencing difficulties, smoke billowing from the starboard jet exhaust. The French inspect the ailing engine as the aircraft is refuelled, and repairs are still in progress when the second aircraft returns to the ship. Sequence showing stropping up of a Zéphyr for a launch - the small size of the aircraft is evident as both ends of the bridle are attached to a single hook under the fuselage, and the man attaching the holdback has a tight squeeze under the tail (in a later shot it can be seen that the Zéphyr, like the Sea Hawk, has no need to fold wings to use Eagle's lifts). The aircraft is tensioned and launched. More launchings and landings. Cut to aerial sequence showing HMS Eagle entering Toulon - a large number of French naval vessels are present, including the battleship Jean Bart. Tugs manoeuvre Eagle alongside one of the quays - her great size (by contemporary standards) is evident. Cut back to Eagle at sea. A French Navy Piasecki flies in a visiting Flag Officer. More trials with the two Alizé and two Zéphyr aircraft. A final brief sequence shows the resumption of routine operations. A Sea Venom FAW.22 489 of 894 Squadron lands on. Gannet AS.4 280 of 814 Squadron flies low over the deck. Gannet 287 lands on.
