- Description: (1) [44] A film to discourage the hoarding of empty milk bottles and small change. Voice over: "You see this (an empty milk bottle is placed on the table) "and this" (a farthing) "neither are very big but both must be kept in circulation. So clear one out of the odd corner and the other out of the old money box. No more hoarders, please". Issue date: 4/1/43. (2) [52] This film encouraged people to continue their efforts to conserve fuel. Two men unload a small delivery van with a Pool Delivery sign stuck on the side. Cut to woman shoppers walking past a London Co-Operative shop selling fruit and vegetables. Cut to a Pool petrol tanker reversing into shot. Voice over: " This country is 25 million gallons on the credit side ". cut to airmen climbing into a bomber. "This petrol goes to the war effort ", MS a woman walking up a suburban street carrying her shopping, "but the credit goes to you". Issue date: 1/3/43. (3) [53] A man is working in a field of cabbages. Commentary: "Thanks to the weather, yes old man, and the growers, we have wonderful supplies of green vegetables at present ". Cut to a stack of cauliflowers and other greens outside a fruit and vegetable shop. "But don't murder the poor vitamins will you". Cut to vegetables drowning in a saucepan of boiling water. Cut to a woman pouring a small amount of water from a kettle into a pan of vegetables. " Boil quickly in very little water ". Finally the commentator reminds us to put a lid over the pan. Issue date: 8/3/43. (4) [43] Commentator: "Its New Year's Day this week how about some good resolutions". A middle aged man reluctantly picks up a bottle of alcohol from a table, then hesitates. "Umm I wonder. Well why not resolve something you'll like". Cut to the man sitting at the table, he lifts the lid from a dish to reveal steaming potatoes and grins at the camera. "Save on bread, eat potatoes instead". Cut to a smiling cartoon potato man (Potato Pete). Issue date: 28/12/42. (5) [72] Announcement of a reduction in the price of dried eggs (the price was reduced on 27 July 1943). CU of a carton of American dried eggs and a tin of dried eggs. Commentary: "The price of dried eggs is one and three now, one and three mind". A finger points at the price label, "even if the old price is still on the package". Two men walk past a women's clothes shop. One of the men doffs his hat at the mannequin standing outside. The shopkeeper comes out and brings the mannequin inside. "Never mind what you see, or someone tells you, find out for yourself". Issue date: 26/7/43. (6) [75] A boy in a warehouse hits a man on the bottom with a cardboard tube as he bends over: "You wouldn't like people to be caught bending". The boy runs off with the man in pursuit. "Nor does your ration book". CU of a bent and creased book dated July 1942. Cut to CU of an unblemished ration book in a plastic case. "Keep it clean in an envelope, don't fold it see". Issue date: 16.8.43. (7) [77] Commentator: "When your putting out the empties". A woman brings out a basket of bottles and is corrected by the voice over: "Not those", she comes out again, with milk bottles this time. "Remember to put out the caps from the bottles as well, or give them to the milkman. They are important, they're the tops". CU of a hand placing tops in a jar and rustling through a pile of tops. Issue date: 30/8/43. (8) [70] A man walks out of a cinema. Voice over: "Most people have got their new ration books. I suppose, and hope, you have got yours. You have, let's have a look at it". The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out his ration book (dated July 1943) to show to the camera. CU of him leafing through the new style ration book. Issue date: 12/7/43. 9) Announcing the arrival of new potatoes in the shops. 10) To encourage shoppers to work out their ration allowance before they go out, rather than bothering the grocer and wasting time. 11) To encourage the use of swedes which contain a lot of vitamin C. 12) New Ration books. 13) Two women are asked if they have transferred their names and addresses from the old to the new ration books. 14) Instructions on how and where to collect the new ration books. 15) Announcement that a double share of dried eggs is now available. 16) A further reminder about the new ration books. 17) A reminder that the under threes are entitled to free cod liver oil and orange juice during the winter.
