- Title: ROYAL NAVAL PHANTOMS OPERATE FROM USS SARATOGA [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 4200
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Four Royal Navy Phantoms of 892 Squadron operate from USS Saratoga, aircraft carrier of the 6th Fleet, for a six-day period of exercises in the waters about Malta.
- Description: Reel One. Aerial sequence shot from a helicopter off starboard bow of USS Saratoga steaming at sea. A US Phantom is launched from the port bow catapult, followed by a Corsair from the waist. An Intruder is launched, followed by a US Phantom F-4J of VF-31 and RN Phantom 012 of 892 Squadron. LS of the carrier with an A-5 Vigilante on foredeck. Aerial shots from off to port as RN Phantoms do 'rollers' - touch-and-go landings which were part of their brief carrier qualification for operating from Saratoga. Rollers completed, a RN Phantom lands on. Cut to on-deck sequence as RN Phantom 013 XV 569 is secured to port bow catapult. An A-3 Skywarrior is launched, followed by RN Phantoms. MS as Phantom 013 folds wings and taxies forward. 011 lands on. HA onto two US Phantoms on deck and pan forward to RN Phantom and Skywarrior on bow catapults - as seen earlier. HAs of RN Phantoms being launched and landing on. On-deck sequence shot in low light - a USN Phantom performs a touch-and-go. LA.CU of fire crash tender with foam cannon on top of the cabin. LA to Saratoga's island, bearing the pendant 60, and pan right to show RN Phantoms at their 'car quals' - the planeguard helicopter is a Kaman Seasprite. 013 taxies past right to left - USS SARATOGA has been painted on the fuselage below the tailfin, and on the tailfin itself is Ark Royal's letter code 'R' (although 892 Squadron was still based at Yeovilton). After more rollers, 011 and 012 join the park. LAM Waller of 892 Squadron directs the pilot of 013 as he positions the aircraft on the starboard bow catapult. 013 is stropped up, the long nose-wheel strut lifting the aircraft's nose - as 013 is launched the blast from the Spey turbofans can clearly be seen playing on the flightdeck. A US Phantom of VF-31 is launched - pitched at a lower angle the engine exhausts clear the deck. MS as catapult shuttle is retracted - it is glowing red hot. LA.CU of an A-5 Vigilante on catapult. A US Phantom is launched - the starboard engine flares briefly as it takes off. As the shuttle of the portside bow catapult is retracted a Corsair passes left to right, just launched from the waist catapult. An Intruder follows the Corsair as Phantom 200 of VF-103 is prepared on the port bow catapult - the Bow Cat Officer signals and 200 is launched. Reel Two. RN Phantom 013 (serial XV 569) taxies forward to join the deck park after landing on. Observer and pilot, 892 Squadron's Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Commander Davies, deplane and walk off with a group of US aircrew - one shakes hands with Davies. USN personnel inspect 013. CU of the Rolls Royce flash on engine intake duct. A Grumman Hawkeye lands on. LS-CU-LS as a US Phantom does a roller.
