- Summary:
- Description: I. Japanese troops board a small steamer alongside jetty. More troops march up in column, ground arms and close up ranks. II. Submarine HMS Spearhead alongside in dockyard. Crewmen act up for the camera - they hold Japanese flags, and one brandishes a Japanese sword, another a fan. CU of ship's nameplate, and pan up to her captain, Lieutenant Youngman, on the bridge fin, then down over 3-inch gun to crew. Further close ups of cheery crew members. III. Continuation of I. The steamer, crowded with Japanese, moves away from the quayside - a barge has been lashed alongside the vessel to accommodate more men. As the steamer moves away, more Japanese unload kit from the back of a lorry drawn up on the quayside - the Japanese guards are fully equipped, carrying rifles with fixed bayonets - the rest pile arms. Cut to a group of Chinese outside a building, and views of apparently deserted block, pock-marked by bullets. Nissan 4x2 cargo lorry draws up on the quayside with another party of Japanese. IV. Air-sea rescue. LS as a TBD Avenger circles over man in life raft - two smoke floats burn on the water. Cameracraft, men crowding the focsle guard rail, closes on the marked area. On the horizon, a fleet carrier and a destroyer are visible. Ship's boat rows across having picked up the airman - TBD goes low overhead, flaps down. V. Elements of Task Group 111.2 enter Hong Kong Bay. Cameraship enters the bay preceded by a destroyer - two destroyers and the depot ship HMS Maidstone visible in the distance. LS along the coastline - at the end of the sequence, aircraft are visible over the distant hills. LS to coast - a Dido Class cruiser (presumably HMS Euryalus) is stern-to in the middle distance. VI. Hong Kong. A crowd of Chinese applaud members of RN shore party. MS of Japanese troops waiting on the quayside under armed guard. A small party of women (comfort troops?) are also under escort. Under RN supervision, Japanese unload stores from the back of a lorry. Japanese troops board boat alongside jetty - as is sequence I. MS to Japanese fell in on quayside - a bespectacled Petty Officer, 2nd Class, stares at the camera impassively. HA.MS from jetty as steamer and barge move away. VII. Rear-Admiral Harcourt visits internee flats. Lieutenant, RN, talks with a small group of children, while a senior internee points out something of interest to the admiral. Harcourt is applauded by the newly liberated British. From the balconies of the flats hang an assortment of towels, underwear, and a small Union Jack.
