Summary: Royal Navy Presentation Team film in which the importance of sea trade to the United Kingdom is explained.
Description: The co-ordinated use of maritime patrol aircraft, nuclear and conventional submarines, helicopters and frigates in anti-submarine warfare is described, and the role of the Invincible Class aircraft carriers in the anti-submarine and air defence roles is also mentioned. The layers of defence normally in place around warships at sea are listed, beginning with Royal Navy Sea Harrier aircraft, supported by US Navy aircraft such as the F14 Tomcat, seen launching from the deck of a carrier, and the RAF's Tornado F3 interceptor. Inner layers of defence are provided by the Sea Dart surface to air missile system seen in the Type 42 destroyer HMS Newcastle (D.87), Sea Wolf missiles and various gun systems. The British commitment to the defence of Norway, a Royal Marines responsibility, is illustrated and the importance of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in sustaining operations at sea is explained as the Type 42 destroyer HMS York replenishes at sea. The Hunt Class mine countermeasures vessel HMS Cattistock (M.31) demonstrates mine clearance operations, the protection of fisheries and oil and gas platforms is mentioned, and hydrographic survey vessels appear briefly. The tasks carried out by the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service, Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service, Women's Royal Naval Service and Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service and civilian research establishments are described, new projects such as the Type 23 frigate and Upholder Class submarine mentioned briefly and the Soviet threat explained with reference to images of the aircraft carrier Kiev.
