- Film Number: ADM 1388
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - KOREA [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary:
- Description: I. HMCS Athabaskan. Disjointed sequences including a brief shot of the twin 4-inch guns of Y turret trained over the port beam. MCU from behind the gun position as loaders feed clips for twin Bofors Mk 5 and the gun fires towards offshore islands - the fire is selective, the gun firing in 4-round groups (ie half a clip, each barrel) - some tracer - camera angle changing slightly during the sequence. II. Night firing sequence shot from aft on the starboard side forward to Athabaskan's bridge - 40mm AA between the funnels fires occasional tracer over the beam. III. Daytime. HA.MS aft to Y turret, which is trained to port - a deliberate fire by single barrels, the ship at anchor. IV. Cruising along the coast. HA.MS to portside single Bofors on gun position between the funnels - loader takes clips from ready-use locker as gun fires rapid bursts over the beam. HA.CU of twin 40mm trained over the port beam - right-hand barrel fires two-round groups - the feed to the left-hand barrel is jammed, and the loader works to clear it. LS of coast. HA.MS aft to Y turret trained over the starboard quarter - the destroyer having presumably come about onto the reciprocal of its previous course - left-hand barrel fires. Twin 40mm fires to shore - the jam in the left-hand feed persists, and loader talks with the layer as he works to clear it. LS to coast - shells burst in the water and smoke rises from various points onshore, including one fairly substantial fire. V. Rear-Admiral Scott-Moncrieff inspects RM guard on the quarterdeck before departing in ship's motor launch to visit the Republic of Korea Naval Academy at Pusan. Royal Marine band strikes up. Vice-Admiral Sohn comes onboard and inspects the guard of honour. VI. Visit to HMS Belfast by President Syngman Rhee at Pusan. HA as launch comes alongside - Syngman Rhee comes onboard with Vice-Admiral Sohn and Rear-Admiral Scott-Moncrieff. RM guard inspected. The President bids goodbye to Scott-Moncrieff and Captain Duckworth, and departs. VII. Inter-service football match at Chinhai between officers of the Belfast and the Korean Naval College: Vice-Admiral Sohn and Rear-Admiral Scott-Moncrieff are among the spectators. The crowd is entertained by Belfast's Royal Marine detachment and band. The Naval College's own band is also present.
