Summary: Helicopter WV.197, an American-built Whirlwind HAS.21 of 848 Squadron, has a complete new gear box fitted.
Description: The Whirlwind is parked on a concrete apron near the perimeter fence of the air station. Mechanics remove the rotors. An A-frame is set up and the helicopter pushed into position so that the lifting tackle can take off the rotor head. A new gear box has been brought from the shed and unwrapped; the rotor head is now manhandled onto it and connected. The old gear box is then lifted out of the helicopter, and the rotor head and new gear box assembly dropped into place. The A frame is then lowered, and the crew take a break for tea. The end shot shows the men busy making final connections, the helicopter having had its rotors and most of the cowlings replaced.
