Summary: A USMC CH-53 helicopter from the amphibious assault ship SS Iwo Jima uses a hydrofoil sweep sled to clear mines in the Canal. The press visit the Iwo Jima cruising at sea.
Description: LS-MS as a US CH-53D (recognition number 02) flies in to land on the quayside at Port Said. An officer talks on a radio telephone extension from the helicopter. Men adjust towing point at the rear of the partially opened cargo bay. Cut to a second Sea Stallion (recognition number 07) hovering above the waterfront - it is directed to land on the quayside. A Mk 105 hydrofoil sweep sled is lowered by crane into the water, and helicopter 07 lifts off to tow it across the harbour basin to test for the presence of magnetic mines - Abdiel is moored in the background. MS of Abdiel - a Sea Stallion flies right to left with a AN/SPU-1 MOP (Magnetic Orange Pipe) for countering shallow-water mines. Various shots from Abdiel of a US helicopter at work with the Mk 105 sled - in the foreground of one are two British ratings, painting a Union Jack on a minehunter's bridge top to assist air recognition. Cut to Commander Husband addressing a press conference - he is followed by Rear-Admiral McCauley. Cut to a sequence shot during a PR visit to the TF 65 flagship, the amphibious assault ship SS Iwo Jima. The deck is crowded with film crews and journalists, and parked CH-46F Sea Knights and CH-53D MCM helicopters. The press talk with air crew, and are given a ride on the deck edge lift. A CH-53 flies demonstration runs past the carrier. Final sequence is an aerial one from a helicopter circling the Iwo Jima.

Notes: Summary: Operation Nimbus Star (21 April - 3 June) involved a force of 12 RH-53D MCM helicopters in the sweeping of the entire length of the Canal and its approaches at Port Said and Suez Bay, to detect and destroy any live influence ordnance or mines which might endanger later diving and salvage operations. This film shows AMCM Unit Bravo operating from the Port Said waterfront to sweep the harbour before proceeding southwards into the canal. No mines were detonated in the canal during this operation
