- Title: TROOPS RETURN FROM NORWAY [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 547
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN NORTHERN AND ATLANTIC WATERS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: (i) Troops return from Norway. (ii) HMS Nelson conducts an all-calibres shoot at sea. (iii) Three Vosper motor torpedo boats are delivered to the Romanian/Rumanian Navy. (iv) The Duke of Kent inspects sailors and WRNS. (v) ENSA concert on HMS Nelson.
- Description: (i) Men returning from Namsos, including survivors of HMS Bittern. HA as men come through an archway - many are in civilian clothes and one carries skis, while another wears a fur hat. Wives wait expectantly. A sailor kisses his wife enthusiastically. A bearded rating from HMS Bittern gives a thumbs up for the camera. Cut to HA onto a mass of soldiers waiting to board motor transport. Facial CUs of soldiers, two Royal Marines in khaki, and a French naval rating. (ii) A Northern anchorage. LS silhouette off starboard beam of HMS King George V. Shot from focsle of Nelson to turrets and bridge tower - 20-barrelled rocket projector on B turret. LS off the starboard bow of Nelson. HA sequence showing forward turrets trained over the starboard bow. The secondary 6-inch guns fire full salvoes. The main battery fires a 3 gun salvo - a single barrel per turret. MS off the starboard bow of HMS Eskimo (G.75) as she closes to cross the battleship's wake, Nelson having just turned to starboard. (iii) Three Vosper 73ft motor torpedo boats are handed over to the Rumanian Navy in a short ceremony at Vernon Pier, Portsmouth. The Rumanian Minister in London, M Tilea, and his wife are present. The boats are blessed by an Orthodox priest. The customary bottle of champagne is broken - by Mme Dumitrescu, wife of the Rumanian Naval attaché (?) - while the press take photographs. The Rumanian ensign is unfurled. Various shots as the boats are put through their paces for the benefit of the Minister. (iv) The Duke of Kent, wearing RAF uniform, inspects naval ratings and WRNS - one of the sailors wears a 'Fleet Reserve' cap ribbon. The Duke receives the usual cheers. (v) HA onto focsle of HMS Rodney (?) - a stage has been set up behind B turret and X has been trained over the beam to make space. Officers and men enjoy an ENSA concert. The acts include Dorothy Carless, Beatrice Lillie, Jeanne de Casalis (Mrs Feather), and Edith Evans. After the show the stars sign autographs.
