Lieutenant Richard Baker interviews the Admiral regarding his intentions and what is involved in his new position. January. Exercise Minelayer and mine countermeasures support ship «HMS Abdiel» (N.21) undergoes sea trials. Leander Class frigates «HMS Bacchante» (F.69) and «HMS Charybdis» (F.75) are both launched. An earthquake in Sicily is attended by a contingent from the Royal Naval station «HMS St Angelo» on Malta, including 35 sailors and 8 soldiers, who are the first to arrive on the scene. February. Resolution Class ballistic missile submarine «HMS Resolution» (S.22) test fires a Polaris missile March. Resolution Class ballistic missile submarine «HMS Revenge» (S.27) is the 4th Polaris submarine to be launched. County Class guided missile destroyer «HMS London» (D.16) visits Greenwich Pier, London, with Admiral Sir John Bush on board. Bernard Macintyre, the Captain of County Class guided missile destroyer «HMS Kent» (D.12) leaves for a post in the Admiralty. April. Clearance divers from training establishment «HMS Vernon» salvage the fire damaged engine from a crashed Boeing 707. An engine on British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) Flight 712 caught fire after take-off and fell into a gravel pit in Staines, Middlesex, managed to carry out an emergency landing but caught fire once on the ground. Five people were killed, one being stewardess Barbara Harrison, who was posthumously awarded the only George Cross to go directly to a female in peacetime. Chief Petty Officer David Lardner and Leading Seaman Michael Lambert retrieved the engine. Ton Class coastal minesweeper «HMS Upton» (M.1187) from the Naval Countermeasures Squadron tours the country during the "Meet the Navy" scheme, taking elements of their lives in the Royal Navy to schools. Lieutenant Bruce Trenton plays centre half for the Royal Navy and Combined Services hockey teams and has been included in the British Olympics team who are to compete in the 1970 Mexico Olympic Games. Leading Airman Gabbott is to be Britain's representative in the pentathlon during the same Olympics. April. The Fleet Air Arm's first three McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantom FG.1 interceptor aircraft are delivered to «RNAS Yeovilton» in Somerset. Captain Baldwin, commanding officer of «HMS Heron» plays host to the United States Navy pilots who delivered the aircraft from America. May. Majestic Class aircraft carrier «HMS Leviathan» (R.97) is sent to the breakers yard to be scrapped, having laid unfinished in dock for 22 years. Centaur Class aircraft carrier «HMS Hermes» (R.12) hosts the first ever civil aircraft land on a Royal Navy flight deck, being a Britten-Norman BN2 Islander aircraft. Royal Fleet Auxiliary helicopter support ship «HMS Engadine» (K.08) is fitted with a flight deck specifically to accommodate the growing helicopter role in the Royal Navy. May. A large British minefield from the Second World War off the coat of Belgium and the Netherlands is cleared by divers, mainly from the Royal Navy Reserves. June. Prince Phillip presents the Royal Marines of 42 Commando based in Singapore with new colours. The Queen Mother arrives at «HMS Neptune», the Faslane submarine base in Clyde, Scotland, on board the Royal Yacht «HMY Britannia». She is escorted on board Resolution Class ballistic missile submarine «HMS Resolution» (S.22) by Commander Kenneth Brewer from the submarine. Summer. «HMY Britannia» is present for the "Sea Days" Royal Navy exercise off the Isle of Wight coast. Prince Michael of Kent is transferred via a jackstay from «HMY Britannia», onto Daring Class destroyer «HMS Decoy» (D.106), followed by a Squadron level gunnery display. Blackwood type 14 frigate «HMS Exmouth» (F.84) rejoins the fleet, having been the first vessel to be completely fitted with gas turbine engines. Exercise "Polar Express" in Norwegian waters included Centaur Class light fleet aircraft carrier «HMS Bulwark» (R.08), which can be seen being refuelled at sea by fast fleet tanker «RFA Olmeda». A Russian frigate passes very close to observe the activity. June. The passing out parade at the Royal Navy College, Greenwich includes 16 female cadets in the WRNS. A display over the river Thames including Whirlwind, Wasp and Wessex helicopters from the Royal Navy. Oceanographic survey ship «HMS Hydra» (A.144) docks at the Poll of London, alongside the Bulldog Class hydrographic survey ships «HMS Beagle» (A.319) and «HMS Bulldog» (A.317). Around 100 experts from an in international surveyors conference being held in London broke off to take a tour of the ship. Admiral Sir Varyl Begg, the outgoing First Sea lord, bids farewell to the fleet before moving on to become the Governor of Gibraltar. Centaur Class light fleet aircraft carrier «HMS Bulwark» (R.08) and 50 ships are included in the farewell review. Entertainer Jimmy Saville opens the "Air Day" at «RNAS Culdrose», Helston, Cornwall. 4 July. Sir Alec Rose completes his round the world voyage on the yacht «Lively Lady». He was temporarily "lost" but was discovered off the Scilly Isles by Minesweepers «HMS Laleston» (M.1158) and «HMS Lewiston» (M.1208). Leda Class sailing frigate «HMS Unicorn» (1824), having been docked at Dundee since 1872, is transferred into the care of a Royal Naval preservation society, represented at the handing over ceremony by Prince Phillip. Resolution Class submarine «HMS Repulse» (S.23) is launched. September. General Sir Norman Tellier presents a ceremonial award to Lance Corporal Anderson of the pipe band, 42 Commando, based in Singapore. Ice patrol vessel «HMS Endurance» (A.171) leaves for the Antarctic on her first tour. November. Oberon Class submarine «HMS Odin» (S.10) rescues the crew of stricken Liberian tanker «Spyros Lemos». A model of the type 42 destroyer due to be introduced in the 1970s is displayed. A Naval tam enters the London to Sydney car rally, coming 31st out of 98 runners. The team comprised Commander Phillip Stern from «HMS Raleigh», Captain Ian Lees of Spalding and captain Hans Hamilton of «HMS Tyne». Two female officers from the Royal Netherlands navy join the WRNS and are greeted by Admiral Sir Michael Le Fanu, the First sea lord. Chefs from County Class guided missile destroyer «HMS London» (D.16) bake and present a large cake of Tower Bridge to sick children in the London hospital, Whitechapel, London. Chief Petty Officer Cook Vasselow and Commander Ducker made it in their spare time October. Fearless Class amphibious warfare ship «HMS Fearless» (L.10) and County Class guided missile destroyer «HMS Kent» (D.12) move to Gibraltar to host talks between Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith of and British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. December. Christmas messages are sent home from Royal Naval personnel serving abroad. Mrs Healey, wife of politician Denis Healey, is escorted round Resolution Class Polaris submarine «HMS Renown» (S.26) by Commanders Heath and Mills, the submarine's commanding officers. «HMS Sembawang» (also called «HMS Simbang»), the Royal Naval Air Station base in Singapore, is handed over to Singapore. Churchill Class submarine «HMS Churchill» (S.46) is launched by Mrs Soames, the daughter of Winston Churchill. February. The first Polaris missile tests carried out from a submarine, being Resolution Class ballistic missile submarine «HMS Resolution» (S.22).
