Summary: A profile of Austin and Pickersgill Shipyards at Southwich, Sunderland.
Description: The builing of a single ship - the cargo vessel Scottish Trader - is shown through all its aspects, from the drawing office blueprints, the creation of full size templates, the delivery (by rail) of steel plates, their cutting and shaping and their prefabrication into units. These units are then bolted and welded together to using cranes: stern and bow units are shown being put into position. Final assembly and launching. After the launch, the ship is towed to one of the two fitting bays; here the main propulsion machinery is craned into position and the interior is fitted out with furniture and fixtures of all kinds. Also shown is the tanker Finnamore Meadow, which was built in just eighteen weeks.
