Film Number:ADM 6404
Other titles:THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE GULF, 1990-1991 [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: The comedian Bob Carolgees visits HMS Gloucester to entertain the men and collect their Christmas messages. The DPR(N) are seen in action making a film spot about the visit.
Description: HMS Gloucester lies outboard of the repair ship Diligence at Jebel Ali. An officer returns from leave - among his luggage is a carrier bag he has brought from London containing a gift for one of the crew, RO Wallace, from the man's brother. Wallace is called to the flightdeck to receive the present. Staged sequence showing a RM sentry pacing the flightdeck carrying a light support weapon. Cut to arrival of Bob Carolgees, dressed in camouflage - the order to pipe the side is given and he is greeted by a Lieutenant. He plays up to the camera with mock salutes and ostentatious nose picking. Mr Carolgees addresses the ship's company over the tannoy - he has come to collect the crew's Christmas messages, which will be printed in an English newspaper, possibly the Daily Mail. Cut to Bob sitting in the mess with the men - he makes a slightly scabrous joke about Ladas and sheep, and chaffs the cameraman. Two sequences where the cameracrew film cut-ins - unfortunate sailors are required to stand in attentive postures and laugh heartily as though listening - either directly or over the tannoy - to Mr Carolgees' patter.
