Summary: Unedited scenes showing the control room, engine room and motor room on the submarine HMS Grampus.
Description: I. Control room in low key lighting. MS of the attack and search periscopes manned - aft-planesman and panel watchkeeper in frame. Various shots of the captain and officer of the watch at the search periscope. Captain and OOW converse, OOW uses tannoy. MCU as OOW operates snorting switch and turns indicator transmitter to PUMP.
II. Control room. Telegraphs register and repeat orders from the bridge - STOP to SLOW AHEAD TOGETHER.
III. Engine room. MS as engineering mechanic (ME) opens intermediate valve - pan past the gauge panel to engine room artificer (ERA) opening water discharge. CU as LME uncotters induction hull valve, then picks up tannoy - he watches the indicator pointer move to OPEN, and walks away to the emergency flood valve. ERA blows round. MS of a rating as he lights a cigarette - he is standing in passageway by the engines. MS as a rating, wearing headphones, pulls trips and operates port and starboard engines water discharge.
IV. Motor room. The submarine slows - CU as motors are switched from GROUP UP to GROUP DOWN, SLOW AHEAD TOGETHER (ie from batteries in series, developing 440 volts, to batteries in parallel at 220 volts), and GROUP DOWN, HALF AHEAD TOGETHER, to SHAFTS IN SERIES, SLOW AHEAD TOGETHER (ie creep speed). Final CU of LME reading and recording the charging rate of ammeters.
