- Summary: Air operations onboard HMS Formidable during Operation Goodwood, the third of the carrier air strikes against Tirpitz.
- Description: HA onto a running range of Corsairs on cameraship HMS Formidable - in the distance are Indefatigable, Duke of York, and two County Class cruisers. A Corsair straightens wings and takes off, followed by a second aircraft. Chockmen lie on the deck ready to remove the chocks and let a Corsair taxi down the centre-line - one of them has injured himself and while the chocks are dragged clear by another man he hobbles to the safety of the deck edge. MS along the flight deck as another Corsair taxies forward to take off point. Sequence showing Barracudas taking off - in the background of one shot is HMS Indefatigable. MS along the deck as Barracudas land on and taxi forward to the deck park. Among the crewmen standing by is the fire party, dressed in heavy asbestos suits and holding hose and extinguisher. HA aft from the island as another Barracuda lands on - a second comes in too high and aborts - a third (or the second come round again) touches down but drifts over the wire, crashing into the safety barrier and nosing over - the cameraman is not quick enough to catch it and the aircraft runs off the bottom of the frame, and only the tail is seen up-ending and fragments of the smashed propeller blowing down the deck in the stiff breeze - the camera then pans down to the damaged aircraft which has righted itself but is pouring smoke from the engine. As the pilot prepares to jump out, one of the aircraft's wheels is chocked and the fire party spray the engine with foam. The fire is quickly controlled and the Barracuda is pushed away and dropped over the side by the ship's mobile crane. Group shots of Corsair and Barracuda pilots standing by their respective aircraft. Sequence shot from a Barracuda as it takes off from the carrier, camera shooting to the starboard side. Cut to sequence shot on the hangar deck as a Barracuda is pushed onto the lift and taken up. MS of deck crew party as they push a Barracuda along the flight deck, and posed group shot of the men. Cut to aerial view of the Norwegian coast and a fjord obscured by low cloud. Onboard Formidable a RNVR Lieutenant is photographing aircraft in the deck park - ahead of the ship is HMS Duke of York, and HMS Indefatigable is visible off the port bow. Corsair 7Z comes up on the forward elevator. Sequence showing armourers moving a train of 1600-pound bombs along the deck on dollies - in one shot HMS Berwick is seen holding station off the port quarter.
