- Title: HMS LONDON AND HMS CARDIFF EXERCISE TOGETHER [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 6393
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE GULF, 1990-1991 [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary:
- Description: LS from Cardiff's flightdeck to HMS London off to starboard - flightcrew and a DPR(N) man stand or sit near the rail looking out at the frigate. Zoom in on London (F.95) as she steams a parallel course in calm sea, panning along the ship to show details. During this sequence there is the sound of 20mm (?) automatic fire. In the shade cast by the hangar, Cardiff's marine sergeant begins a lesson with one of the ship's GPMGs (marked CF4) for a party of sailors. There is the naming of parts - camera focuses on London which has now fallen into line astern. The Sergeant is talking about stoppages when London's Lynx passes overhead, drowning out his voice. He starts to reassemble the gun, fitting the firing pin into the breech assembly. CU as he locks the barrel in place. Camera pulls away again to bows of London, now holding station on the port quarter. LS of circling Lynx helicopter. CUs of some of the crewmen listening to the sergeant - one is Petty Officer Norcliffe (cf 8104). CU of the sergeant. London - now moving in from starboard to cross Cardiff's wake - comes about hard a'port to fall into line astern again. CU of the ship's name on the nose of the Lynx. The tannoy comes alive with a current events report: political developments - none; the morning's exercises - the sound of firing was shot across the bows drill, London's erratic behaviour is ascribable to officer of the watch manoeuvres; air, surface and airborne radar pictures - all are good, with merchant shipping and US units being followed, while two "enemy aircraft" were tracked flying down the Euphrates valley to the Gulf, where they turned back. With the end of the message the party on the flightdeck resume their lesson. MS of London as Cardiff crosses her bows and she passes astern onto the port quarter, turning to fall into line astern. London moves up on the starboard side, the cameraman obtaining good details of her upper works as she passes - the ship's badge (a dagger red) is painted on the bridge block just forward of the funnel.
