Title:SUPERMARINE E.10/44 DECK LANDING TRIALS ON HMS ILLUSTRIOUS [Main Title]
Film Number:ADM 1799
Other titles:POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Trials of Britain's first carrier-borne jet aircraft.
Description: The film covers two series of trials, the first on 15 October, and the second on 28 October, 1947. In the first series three pilots are involved: Mr Lithgow, Lieutenant-Commander Brown, and Lieutenant Orr. In the second series, Lieutenant Orr is absent. Each landing is prefaced with full technical details, and is filmed first at normal speed by a HA camera shooting aft from the island, and secondly in slow motion from a camera located on an outrigger aft on the starboard side. Only one aircraft is used, the prototype TS 413. In a few cases the aircraft is also shown making a free take off. After Mr Lithgow's first landing, the aircraft is surrounded by a large crowd of spectators, and throughout the trials the carrier's island is packed with large numbers of onlookers.
