Description: Speed in unloading and retracting is essential - a LST risks being stranded if it does not leave within one hour after high water slack. The ramp is hoisted as soon as the last vehicle is disembarked. Soundings are taken and checked against the recorded draught to work out where the ship is grounded, and the ballast shifted accordingly. All engines astern 2/3 - backing starts slowly to avoid fouling the stern anchor cable. Once clear, ballast pumping and engines are stopped and the stern winch hauls the ship out to the anchor. The ramp is secured and the bow doors closed and dogged. The rudders turn the LST away from the anchor cable so that there will be no fouling as the anchor breaks away. Cable and anchor are cleaned and housed. The ship is trimmed for the ocean voyage.
