- Title: INTERVIEWS WITH OFFICERS AND MEN ON HMS CARDIFF [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 6403
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE GULF, 1990-1991 [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Interviews with officers and men, the interviewer mainly concerned with their state of mind in the face of impending hostilities. The ship's Lynx practices rescuing a man from the sea.
- Description: Flightdeck crew (including Martin Norcliffe WL1) take up lashings as Lynx runs up - good LA as the aircraft lifts off. Cut to FDO (?) being briefed on what is required of him in interview, and facial CUs as he answers questions. Has the atmosphere changed since Cardiff's last visit to the Gulf ? Yes, there is the expectation that something will happen. Senior ratings discuss the situation more than the juniors. Interviewer switches to a medical orderly who is asked about the effects on the men of the constant tension - he says that there are definite signs of stress, manifested as tiredness and lethargy. The younger men are affected most. A genuine threat would "pick everybody up". Interview finishes with a general set-up shot, and CUs for cut-ins showing the interviewer's concerned, attentive expression. Sequence showing a practice wet winching - the ship's Searider drops a man into the sea, and the Lynx then moves in on his smoke marker. The helicopter lowers a man into the sea to secure the 'downed airman' with the helicopter rescue strop, and both are then hoisted clear - they are not taken up into the helicopter but are transferred, still on the line, directly to the ship's flightdeck. Break. Interviews with ship's officers. A Lieutenant is asked if there is a feeling of impending war. Yes, there is a feeling that something is going to happen. Morale is high. The weather is not a problem. The crew feel "fairly well in the picture", and are ready for whatever job they are given. A Lieutenant-Commander gives a similar account - everybody would prefer peace, but they have a job to do. The ship will play a full part in any conflict. Another Lieutenant observes that shore-side in the UAE, things don't seem to have changed much since their last tour, and the ex-pats don't seem "too concerned". Emboldened by this slightly unconventional observation, the interviewer asks if having the Iraqis as the bad guys, rather than the Iranians, has made any difference. No. Has the blockade had any effect? The Lieutenant likes to think so. How does he like working alongside the Argentinians? No problem. They are part of the UN, and have a right to send warships like everyone else. Times change. What is the worst Iraqi threat? Aircraft and chemical weapons. Worried? We are ready for anything that might come our way. By the end the Lieutenant is looking a little strained, and has perhaps learnt not to make himself interesting before interviewers. Break. Sequence showing two men stacking cardboard boxes of tinned food on a palnet. The boxes are secured, and a pallet truck is brought up to move the completed load.
