- Title: U-BOATS SURRENDER AT LOCH ERIBOLL [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 1793
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN NORTHERN AND ATLANTIC WATERS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: U-boats enter Loch Eriboll and are disarmed by the Royal Navy.
- Description: CU as U.293, a Type VIIC U-boat comes alongside a sister boat, the U.826, in Loch Eriboll. The newcomer's first officer, sitting on the conning tower watching the mooring of the ship, reaches for his loud hailer to issue an order but then thinks better of it - the U-boat flies the White Ensign signifying that RN personnel have taken over the ship. MS of a bearded Sub-Lieutenant RNVR on the bridge of the U-boat as it secures alongside. HA from the bridge of U.826 to crewmen standing on the deck of U.293 and pan up to the submarine's conning tower where the first officer is now casually smoking - behind him the top of the lowered Hohentwiel radar is visible near the radar receiving aerial - a RN rating holding an Aldis lamp shows a received signal to the Sub-Lieutenant. On the forward deck, the submarine's captain stands talking with men on the cameraship - what he says is obviously humorous for the conning tower of U.826 is crowded with men looking down and as one turns away he is smiling broadly. A Lieutenant-Commander leads a party onboard the securing submarine to carry out an inspection. MS as the U-boat's captain, now on the conning tower, empties his Mauser pistol and hands it to the British. On the deck, the Lieutenant-Commander begins disarming torpedo fuses. MS of the two U-boats lying together. Cut to LS of two U-boats passing left to right at speed, escorted by HMS Fitzroy (K.553). HA from a ship (possibly Philante) as a launch C/T 21, makes off from alongside carrying a RN boarding party to a submarine (possibly U.1105) out in the loch. Sequence showing U.1305 entering the loch beneath a dramatic lowering sky, led in by HMS Deane (K.551), which sends off a boat to inspect - the cameracraft circles U.1305 as Deane's whaler closes on the submarine's starboard quarter and goes alongside. Cut to HA onto the foredeck of U.826, where crewmen stand about smoking - ammunition panniers and jerry cans are being thrown over the side. CUs of the work of disarming U.826 - a crewman stands in a hatchway holding a jerry can which he throws overboard, men lift twin 20mm guns off a mounting and heave them over the side. MS to a German crewman who has obviously overbalanced and fallen in - he swims back to the ship and is dragged onboard by his mates. Men haul out the barrel of the 37mm anti-aircraft gun, one of them holding it cradled in his arms as he leans out from the conning tower and drops it overboard. Sequence showing HMS Byron (K.508) escorting in U.1009 - the U-boat, the first to arrive, having sailed from Bergen, is riding rather light and her black surrender flag is splendidly ragged. The cameracraft circles U.1009, and a final LS shows her hove to below the precipitate shoreline of the loch.
