- Title: HMS NUBIAN ON FIRE SUPPORT DUTIES AT SALERNO [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 540
- Other titles: MEDITERRANEAN OPERATIONS OF THE ROYAL NAVY [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: HMS Nubian and other ships provide fire support after the German attacks of 13/14 September compress the Allied bridgehead at Salerno.
- Description: I. Support forces lay screens. MS through thinning smoke to a L Class destroyer laying a screen. Cameraship passes LST 345 - Nubian is herself laying a screen, the funnels making dense black smoke and white smoke coming from a canister burning on the port side of the quarterdeck - the destroyer also carries smoke canisters at the starboard side and at the stern. LS of HMS Loyal laying a smoke, while in the background a Hunt on a roughly reciprocal course does the same. CU of a lookout on Nubian. HMS Tartar is also laying smoke - she comes hard a'port, heeling with the force of her turn. II. Bombardment. Nubian fires A and B. Merchantmen continue offloading into LCTs. HA sequence showing crew of B gun at work reloading as the guns keep up a steady fire over the starboard bow. LSs of HMS Aurora and HMS Valiant at their bombardment positions - the battleship has just fired and smoke drifts away from the forward turrets. MS off the port bow of HMS Mauritius. LS of Aurora again with her sister Penelope visible in the background. Good MS off the starboard bow of HMS Valiant - she is no longer bombarding, her main armament bearing fore and aft, but the 4.5-inch guns are at maximum elevation, ready for AA defence. LS of destroyer HMS Eggesford (L.15) - Aurora in the background. LS of HMS Tartar. III. Air attack. A bomb explodes close to the cameraship. Nubian and other destroyers lay smoke - shots aft show the dense screen curving away astern. The LSTs in the bay are surrounded by screens. Nubian manoeuvres violently - as she comes hard a'starboard the force of the turn jars an Oerlikon gun loose from its setting and the barrel rides up to point vertically into the sky. Final sequence showing Nubian's guns again firing to shore.
