- Title: A NAVAL OCCASION [Main Title]
- Film Number: ADM 414
- Other titles: BRITISH CREWS ARRIVE IN AMERICA TO TAKE OVER LEND-LEASE DESTROYERS [Allocated Title]
- Summary: A liner carries RN crews across the Atlantic to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they take over the third group of ex-American destroyers for the voyage back to Britain. 'Good Scenes' at the end of the reel show gun drill on the liner.
- Description: Onboard a passenger ship (possibly Duchess of Richmond), en route to Halifax, RN crews are kept in good spiritual and physical health by divine service and vigorous PT. A Sunderland circles over the convoy. An escorting destroyer signals as the weather closes in. The cameraship enters port. Cut to the RN crews marching to the destroyer anchorage, preceded by their own band and waved on by a few Canadian women spectators. LS across the harbour shows USS Williams (108), USS Thatcher (162), and USS Mackenzie (175) waiting alongside. The British crews fall in on the quayside. Men file onboard USS Hopewell (181) and USS Abbot (184). Kit is carried onboard the ships. The White Ensign is raised onboard one of the destroyers. The ships raise steam. HA from one of the destroyers as it departs the harbour - a few men wave casual salutes of farewell. HMS Roxburgh (ex-USS Foote) passes right to left. LS as a Supermarine Stranraer flies over. Various shots of some of the destroyers at sea. The cameraship rolls in the Atlantic swell. Crewmen in duffel coats give thumbs-up for the camera. Signalman with Aldis lamp. Gun drill with the 4-inch guns and 3-inch AA. Portside triple torpedo tubes are trained outboard. Sunset at sea. AA fire with .50 calibre machine gun. Cameraship lays smoke as she passes HMS Brighton. 'Good Scenes' include children evacuees playing ring a'roses on the liner's upper passenger deck and a mock sequence where, after an alert from a lookout, the quarterdeck mounted 6-inch gun is manned and opens fire. The ship's captain commands the gun.
